Pinecone Bromeliad (Acanthostachys strobilacea) is a species of epiphytic bromeliad plant in the family Bromeliaceae, native to Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. The common name is derived from the red-cone like inflorescence, with bright yellow flowers emerge from between the red scales. Pinecone bromeliad is a beautiful ornamental plant, suitable for hanging basket.
Pinecone Bromeliad, 30-45 cm tall, has pendant growing habit with reedlike, drooping leaves. The gray scurf-covered slender leaves are long, narrow, deep green, leathery-textured, with sharp spines along the margins. Wear glove or protective clothing when handing the plant. Yellow flowers and cone-like red fruit are borne on slim stems.
Pinecone bromeliad prefers full sun and humus-rich, well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant and is suitable for xeriscaping.
Propagation is by offsets, dividing rhizomes, tubers, corms or bulbs.
