Anise(Pimpinella anisum)is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, known for its flavor, which resembles liquorice, fennel and tarragon. It is native to eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia.

Anise is an annual herbaceous plant growing to about 1 m tall. The leaves at base of plant are simple, 1-5 cm long and lobed, while leaves on the upper part of stems are feathery pinnate, divided into numerous leaves. White flowers are produced in dense umbels, follow by fruits which are oblong dry schizocarps commonly referred to as aniseeds.

Anise is foodplant for larvae of some Lepidoptera species (butterflies and moths) such as lime-speck pug and wormwood pug. Anise is sweet and has licorice-like flavor. The seeds are used to flavor dishes, drinks, and candies. Anise can be used to relieve menstrual cramps as it contians anethole, a phytoestrogen.

Anise plant grows well in sun, fertile and well-drained soil. Propagation is by seeds.
