Apple mint (Mentha suaveolens)is a herbaceous, perennial plant commonly grown as a culinary herb and/or ground cover. It is a species in mint genus Mentha, native to the southern and western Europe and western Mediterraneanregion.
Apple mint, 40-100 cm tall, has leaves that are opposite, sessile, oblong to ovate, light green, 3-5 cm long, and 2-4 cm broad. The leaves are slightly hairy on top and downy underneath with serrated margins. Apple mint bears light purple-pink flowers in mid- to late summer. Apple mint is often grown as ornamental plant as it is hardy and easy to grow, and prefers full sun to partial shade conditions. It spreads by rhizomes and form clonal colonies.
Apple mint leaves can be used to make apple mint jelly, as flavoring in salad and cooked dishes, mint tea,and as a garnish.
Pineapple mint (Mentha suaveolens 'Variegata') is a cultivar of Apple mint that bears green leaves that are variegated in white.
