Astilbe (False goat's beard, False spirea)

Astilbe is a genus of rhizomatous flowering plants in the family Saxifragaceae, comprising about 18 species. It is native to mountain ravines and woodlands in Asia and North America. Some species of Astilbe are commonly known as False Goat's Beard and False Spirea.

Astilbe is grown for its attractive, ferny folliage and plumes of colourful flowers.

Astilbe thrive best in sun or partial shade in moisture-retentive soil. It is a popular pond side feature as Astilbe is a tall feathery flowered plant with beautiful colours of white, red, pink and purple.

Astilbe can be propagated by division in spring or winter. Leaf spot and powdery mildew are its diseases.
