Aucuba is a genus of flowering plants in family Garryaceae, native to eastern Asia, from eastern Himalaya east to Japan.
Aucuba japonica ( Spotted Laurel ) is the only known species to be widely grown. It has glossy but dull green leaves. In spring, small red-purple flowers are borne and female plants have bright red berries in autumn.
Aucuba japonica is widely grown by gardeners as an ornamental plant. It is valued for its colourful evergreen folliage and the bright red berries.
Aucuba can be planted in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. It is easy to plant and propagates through semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
