Basmati is a variety of long grain rice, notable for its fragrance, delicate, nuanced flavor. India and Pakistan are the largest cultivators and exporters of basmati rice. The name Basmati means 'the fragrant one' or 'the soft rice' in Sanskrit. It comes in two varieties - white and brown.
The grains of basmati rice are longer than most types of rice. Cooked basmati rice is not sticky as with most long-grain rice, and produce a unique pandan-like (Pandanus fascicularis leaf) flavor, caused by the aroma compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline.
