Beech nut is the fruit of beech tree, a native to temperate Europe, Asia and North America. Beechnut, also known as beechmast, is a small, sharply three-angled nut 10-15 mm long, borne singly or in pair in soft-spiked husk called cupules, 1.5 - 2.5 cm long. The husks are dropped from beech tree in autumn. The beechnuts are edible, bitter, with an astringent taste and high in tannin content.
