Cacti and Succulents

Succulents are water-retaining plants that grow in arid climate and soil conditions. Succulent plants store water in their leaves, stems and roots. As a result, the leaves of succulent plants have a fleshy appearance which itself is known as succulence.

Many succulents come from dry places in the tropics, such as up in very high mountains, on steppes, semi-deserts and deserts. The hot weather and low rainfall force these plants to collect and store water to survive long periods of drought.
