Cantharellus cibarius is a fungus commonly known as chanterelle, golden chanterelle, girolle or pfefferlinge. It is the best known species in genus Cantharellus, and also one of the best and most easily recognizable mudhrooms. The chanterelle is a egg yellow color, funnel-shaped and meaty fungus, with a scent of apricots. It can be found in Asia, Europe, North America and Australia, under pine, beech or birch trees.
One of the poisonous species which has a similar appearance with Cantharellus cibarius is the False chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca). One needs to confidently familiar with the chanterelle characteristic features to avoid picking up the poisonous one.
