Cassia fistula
Cassia is a tropical tree from the genus of Fabaceae, in the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. Note that the name "cassia" is also ised for Cinnamomum aromaticum, a totally different genus of trees. This page, however, is about Cassia fistula, commonly known as the Golden Shower Tree.
Cassia fistula is a medium-sized tree. It has a fast growth and can reach 10-20 meters tall. The leaves are deciduous or semi-evergreen, about 15-60 cm long, pinnate with 3-8 pairs of leaflets. Cassia fistula is grown for its profusion of yellow flowers. These flowers are produced in pendulous racemes 20-40 cm long. Each flower is 4-7 cm in diameter with five yellow petals of equal size and shape. The tree bears fruits which identifies it as a legume. The pod is 30-60 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm broad. It has a pungent odour and containing several seeds which are poisonous.
