Meyer lemon (Citrus × meyeri)
Meyer lemon (Citrus × meyeri) is a hybrid citrus fruit in the family Rutaceae, native to China. It is a cross between a true lemon and either a common orange or mandarine. It is commonly grown in China as an ornamental plant due to its compact size, hardiness and productivity. Meyer lemon is also known as Chinese dwarf lemon, dwarf lemon or improved Meyer lemon.
Meyer lemon is a hardy plant, growing 2-3 m tall, but can be pruned smaller. The dark green leaves are shiny. The white with a purple base flowers are fragrant. Meyer lemon, 7.5 cm diameter, has frangrant, thin and canary-yellow skin, and is rounder and larger than a common lemon. The fruit's skin is thinner and smoother, and lacks the lemon 'nipple'. When ripe, Meyer lemon is deep yellow with a slight orange tint. The pulp is dark yellow, juicier, sweeter with less acidic flavor, with each fruit contains up to 10 seeds.
Meyer lemon which grows from seed usually begin fruiting in 4 years. It grows well in full sun or partial shade. Water regularly, less so during cold months, and fertilize during growing periods.
Meyer lemon is usually eaten raw, used in making juices, desserts and for flavoring.
