Earth star (Cryptanthus zonatus) is a species of epiphytic bromeliad in the family Bromeliaceae, endemic to Brazil. It has many varieties with different colored leaves. The plant is suitable for growing indoors and is usually grown for its foliage. The genus name is derived from Greek word 'cryptos' meaning hidden, and 'anthos' meaning flower.
Cryptanthus zonatus, 15-30 cm tall, has greenish brown, strap-shaped, crinkly leaves, 12-15 cm long and 5 cm wide, tapering to a sharp point. The leaves are adorned with wavy white lines and sharp edges, the underside is soft gray. The plant bears three petaled white flowers on short, erect stem in mid-spring to mid-summer.
Propagation is by dividing rhizomes, tubers, corms or bulbs (including offsets). Avoid excessive watering, allow the soil to dry for a few days between waterings.
