Doronicum (Leopard's Bane)

Doronicum (Leopard's Bane) is a genus of 35 species of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe, southwest Asia and Siberia. They are all herbaceous perennials producing yellow, daisy-like flowers in spring and summer.

Doronicum grandiflorum is a perennial herb, found growing in limestone rubble and gravel, such as that on eroding mountain slopes. It is native to mountainous regions in the Alps, Pyrenees and northern Balkans. Its leaves are large, ovate, toothed-edge ground leaves, supported by long, narrow petioles. Leaves of alternate spacing are also grown on the lowering half of the flowering stems. Beautiful golden-yellow flowers, consisting of both ray and disc, are borne singly on hairy stalks from mid spring to early summer.

Doronicum orientale (Leopard's Bane), 60 x 90 cm, is a rhizomatous perennial bearing golden-yellow flowers in mid-spring to early summer. It is a hardy perennial, usually grown as ornamental plant. All parts of the plant are poisonous to humans, if ingested. The daisy-like flowers which are borne on long, straight stems, attract nectar-eating insects.

Doronicum pardalianches (Great Leopard's Bane), 1 m x 60 cm, is useful for providing colors under trees and shrubs. Yellow-daisy-like flowers are produced in mid- to late spring.

Doronicum grows well in partial shade, in fertile and moisture-retentive soil. Propagation is by seed in spring or division in autumn. Doronicum is susceptible to leaf spot, mildew and root rot.
