Elaeagnus (Silverberry, Oleaster)

Elaeagnus (Silverberry, Oleaster) is a genus of about 50-70 species of flowering plants in family Elaeagnaceae, native to temperate and subtropical regions of Asia. Elaeagnus is a deciduous or evergreen shrub or small tree with leaves and shoots usually covered with tiny silvery to brownish scales. This gives the plant a whitish to grey-brown color if view from a distance. The flowers give a fragrant smell and are small in size. The fruit is a single fleshy drupe with one seed.

Elaeagnus needs sunny, fertile and well-drained soil to grow best. Propagation is through seed in autumn, greenwood cutting in spring, semi-ripe cuttings in mid-summer. Beware of coral spot as this can caused damage to the plant.
