Fargesia is a genus of about 90 recognized species of clumping bamboos in family Poaceae, native to alpine conifer forests of East Asia. The scientific name Fergasia was given in honour of the French missionary and amateur botanist Père Paul Guillaume Farges.
Fergasia are medium to small mountain clumping bamboos. They can be found in alpine conifer forests of East Asia, China south to to Vietnam and west to eastern slopes of the Himalayas. Known in Chinese as Jian Zhu, meaning "arrow bamboo". Common bamboo in the genus Fargesia are esseantial food for the pandas. Fargesia bamboos are clump-forming, evergreen, hardy and do not spread vigorously, they are good for hedging or screening and also good to plant in containers.
Fergasia is good to plant in sun or partial shade, fertile and moisture-retentive soil. Propagation is done by dividion in spring or divide rhizomes in spring. Slugs and snails are pests that need to be taken care of.
