Fingerroot (Boesenbergia rotunda) is a medicinal and culinary herb from China and Southeast Asia. It is also known as Chinese ginger, krachai (Thai) and temu kuntji (Indonesia). The root has traditionally been called fingerroot as the shape of the rhizome resembles that of fingers growing out of a center piece.
In the west, fingerroot is usually found pickled or frozen. In Manipuri state in India, fingerroot is called Yai-macha, and is used in the treatment of tonsilitis and gastric troubles. In the case of dysentery, root powder is used.
