Galanthus (Snowdrop) is a genus comprising about 20 species of flowering plants in the family Amaryllidaceae, native to a large area of Europe, some from the eastern Mediterranean.
Galanthus are perennial, herbacous plants that grow from bulb. They have dainty drooping heads, variously marked with green. Galanthus nivalis (Common snowdrop) is the most well-known species of Galanthus, growing to a height of 7-15cm, bears pure white flowers, the inner petals with a V-shaped green mark and have a faint scent of honey.
Plant Galanthus in sun or partial shade, in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, can be planted in containers too. Propagation method is by divide after flowering or by seed sown either when ripe or in spring. Look out for pests and diseases like Narcissus bulb fly and grey mould.
