Hatiora Gardening

Hatiora is a genus of epiphytic cacti in the family Cactaceae, comprising about six species. All species occurs in the tropical rainforests of the Mata Atlântica in South-Eastern Brazil. Hatiora species are perennial, epiphytic cacti with short, jointed, cylindrical stems, with each swollen at one end like a bottle.

Hatiora gaertneri (Easter cactus), 15 cm tall and 20 cm wide, is a bushy cactus with flat, oblong, glossy green stem segments, each about 5 cm long. The segments are often tinged red at edges. Each segment end bears orange-red flowers in spring.

Hatiora grows well in partial shade and well-drained soil. Keep the soil damp in summer and water a little in winter. The terminally borne flowers are actinomorphic and are always coloured. Its fruit is a berry. Propagation is by stem cuttings in spring or summer.
