Helenium is a genus of flowering plants in family Asteraceae, comprising about 40 species. It is native to North America and Central America. Helenium, particularly Helenium autumnale, is commonly known as Sneezeweed, based on the use of its dried leaves in making snuff, inhaled to cause sneezing. The other common name is Helen's Flower.
Helenium is annual, biennial or perennial plant grown for its bright and daisy-like flowers, bloom from summer and into autumn. Taller forms of Helenium will need staking. It also makes a good cut flower. Helenium autumnale bears flowers from late summer to mid-autumn. The red flowers, tinged with yellow, are borne in large clusters. Many perennial hybrids produce colorful flowers from late summer to mid-autumn, growing to about 1m x 60cm. Plant Helenium in full sun and moisture-retentive soil. Propagation is by seed in spring or division in spring or autumn. Helenium is quite hardy but prevent leaf spot from attacking the plant.
