Kalopanax (Kalopanax, Prickly Castor-oil tree, Tree Aralia or Castor Aralia)

Kalopanax (Kalopanax, Prickly Castor-oil tree, Tree Aralia or Castor Aralia) is a genus in family Araliaceae, native to China, Japan, Korea and part of Russia, where it grows in the forests. Kalopanax septemlobus is the only species in the genus.

Kalopanax has attractive leaves, white flowers and bears small, round, blue-black fruits containing 2 seeds. It can grow to a height of 30 m with a trunk of 1-1.5m in diameter. In winter, the bare trunk and stems are heavily spined.

Kalopanax like full sun or partial shade, in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Propagation is done either by seed in autumn or greenwood cuttings in early summer.
