Kerria (Japanese yellow rose) is a genus in the rose family Rosaceae, native to eastern Asia, China, Japan and Korea. Kerria japonica is the only species in the genus. The genus is named after William Kerr, a Scottish gardener at Kew Gardens and plant hunter, who also introduced the cultivar Pleniflora.
Kerria is a deciduous shrub which can grow to a height of 1-3 m tall, suitable for hedges, borders and woodland gardens. They are grown for their bright green leaves and single or double, golden-yellow flowers which are borne in spring. The flowers have 5 petals and fruit is a dry, single-seeded achene of 5mm long.
Plant Kerria in sun or partial shade, in fertile and well-drained soil. Propagation is through greenwood cuttings in summer or divide in autumn. No known pest or disease for this plant.
