Kniphofia (Tritoma, Red-Hot Poker, Torch Lily and Poker Plant)

Kniphofia (Tritoma, Red-Hot Poker, Torch Lily and Poker Plant) is a genus comprising about 70 species of plants in the family Asphodelaceae, native to Africa. Kniphofia is named after a 18th century German physician and botanist, Johann Hieronymus Kniphof.

Kniphofia is deciduous or evergreen perennial, bearing spikes of brightly-colored, hanging, red, yellow and orange flowers which blooms from late spring to early autumn. The brightly-colored flowers do not always mix well with other plants, but some new cultivars have subtler colors and can be grown in mixed borders. The flowers attract bees.

Kniphofia rooperi is a hardy evergreen species, 1.2m x 60cm, with dark green leaves and orange-red flowers from early to late autumn.

Plant Kniphofia in sun or partial shade, in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Propagation is by seed in spring or division in late spring. Pests and diseases are thrips and root rot.
