Larix is a genus of conifers in the family Pinaceae, comprising about 10-14 species. It's common name is Larch and is native to cooler temperate regions in northern Hemisphere and are among the dominant plants in boreal forests of Russia and Canada.
Larchen are deciduous trees with good autumn colors, fast-growing with slender branches that droops gracefully when the trees mature. Their leaves are soft, flat, needle-like of 2-5 cm long and 1mm wide. The leaves are bright green in spring, turning rich yellow or orange in autumn and remain on tree until late autumn, leaving the tree bare throughout winter. The cones develop in spring and remain on tree all year, green or purple when small, ripening brown 5-8 months after pollination.
Plant Larch in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Larch is prone to the fungal canker disease Lachnellula willkommii (Larch Canker).
