Leccinum aurantiacum is an edible mushroom commonly known as Red-capped Scaber Stalk. This mushroom can be found under conifers and deciduous trees in late summer and autumn in North America and Europe.
Leccinum aurantiacum has orange-red convex cap of up to 20 cm in diameter. The flesh is white and when it get bruised the color will change to burgundy, then grayish or purple-black. The small whitish pores under the cap will bruise olive-brown. The bare stipe is 10-18 cm tall and 2-3 cm thick, whitish with short, rigid projections or scabers that turn to brown to black with age. The stipe can bruise blue-green.
This edible mushroom can be prepared together with other boletes. The flesh turns very dark when cooking. Check mushrooms carefully before cooking as these mushrooms are popular with maggots.
