Gibbous duckweed (
Lemna gibba) is a species of duckweed in the family Araceae, widespread throughout Britain, the Himalayas, Africa, and North and South America. It is also known as Fat duckweed or Swollen duckweed. The species name gibba is referring to the enlarged air pockets called aerenchyma.
Gibbous duckweed is a common small water plant, forming a green mat on the surface of stagnant or slow-moving water bodies. It has a simple plant body, known as thallus, measuring up to 5 mm in diameter and floats on the surface of the water. Gibbous duckweed has a single root that hangs down into the water.
Gibbous duckweed propagates mainly through vegetative reproduction.
