Ligularia Gardening

     About Tim & Esther

Ligularia is a genus of perennial plants or herbs in the family Asteraceae. It is commonly known as Leopard plant, and occurs mostly in damp places in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Ligularia is an imposing plant, suitable for growing near a natural pond, in bog garden or in a mixed border where the soil never dry out. It is useful for providing height and for flowering in late summer, when other plants are starting to fade.

Lugularia dentata (golden groundsel), 1.5 x 1 m, bears bright-orange, daisy-like flowers in a tall spike from mid- to late summer.
L. 'Desdemona' has orange flowers and brown green leaves, while L. 'Othello' bears orange flowers and purplish green leaves. Both can grow to 1 meter tall.
L. przewalskii, 1.8 x 1 m, has large, deeply cut, green leaves and bears clusters of yellow flowers on dark purple-green stems from mid- to late summer.
L. 'Gregynog Gold' is one of the best of the garden hybrids. It has large leaves of 35 cm long, are deeply vined and heart-shaped. It bears large conical spikes of orange-yellow flowers in late summer to early autumn.
Plant Ligularia in full sun and in moisture-retentive soil. Propagation is by seed in autumn or spring or by division in spring. Beware of slugs and snails.
