Melianthus is a genus of evergreen shrubs in family Malianthaceae. It is native to South Africa. The plant is grown for its attractive blue-green serrated leaves and unusual flowers.

Melianthus major (Honey Bush, Giant Honey Flower) is an evergreen shrub, endemic to South Africa and naturalised in India, Australia and New Zealand. It can grow to 2-3 m tall and has large, blue-green spreading and sharply toothed leaves which have an unpleasant odour. In spring, it bears a spike of dark brown-red flowers, follow by green pods. All parts of the plants are poisonous. Melianthus looks best if planted next to a pond or amid a group of canna.

Melianthus is easy to plant and flowers best in poor soil, but if you prefer the handsome leaves, make sure the soil is fertile and moisture-retentive. Propagation is by seed in spring and softwood cuttings in spring.
