Morchella elata is a species of fungus commonly known as Black Morel, grows in small group on soils in forests, and well-known in North America and Europe.
Morchella elata has a hollow fruiting body, 5-10 cm tall, with an ovoid or conical head. The stipe is swollen at the base, 4-10 cm tall, 1.5 - 5 cm broad. Morchella elata can be distinguished from other Black Morels by its smooth, white stalk in younger specimen, and cap with steel-gray color in the ridges and pits. It can also be characterized by its brown or reddish-purple, elongated, cylindrical, slightly pointed globular, longitudinal pits.
