White lotus (Nymphaea alba)
White Lotus (Nymphaea alba) is a species of freshwater aquatic flowering plant in the family Nymphaeaceae. It is also known as European White waterlily, Nenuphar, or Water lily, and can be grown in most parts of the world.
White lotus grows well in large, still ponds and lake, in water from 30-150 cm deep. It grows well in full sun or partial shade. The underwater stem is buried in the mud and sends down rootlets for anchorage. The leaves are up to 30 cm in diameter and can spread up to 250 cm per plant. The leaves have a radial notch from the circumference to the petiole (leaf stem) in the center. White lotus bears star-like, pure white flowers about 15 cm wide, with distinctive yellow stamens.
The rhizome of white lotus is astringent and antiseptic, and contains active alkaloids nupharine and nymphaeine, resin, glycosides, and tannins.
