Egyptian Blue Waterlily (Nymphaea caerulea)
Egyptian Blue Waterlily (Nymphaea caerulea) is a species of aquatic flowering plant in the family Nymphaeaceae, indigenous to Tanzania, Kenya. It is also known as Scared blue lily, Egyptian Blue water lily or Blue waterlily. It grows along lakes and rivers in wet soil, and suitable for bogs and water gardens.
Blue lotus produces round, glossy leaves, 25-40 cm across, with a notch at the leaf stem. The blue-violet flowers are 10-15 cm in diameter, and blooms in spring. It grows well in sunny positions in medium or clay loam.
Extract of blue lotus is used in abhyanga massage, basti treatments, the arts and yoga, and is loaded with health giving phytosterols, bioflavonoids and phosphodiesterase.
Propagation is by division of rhizomes, or by seeds.
