Ranunculus is a genus of flowering plants in genus Ranunculaceae, with a huge family of 400 species. It includes buttercups, spearworts and water crowfoots. Ranunculus are herbaceous annual, biennial or perennial with bright yellow or white (with yellow centre) flowers. The yellow species normally have petals of highly lustrous color. Many cultivars with large and brightly colored flowers are popular ornamental flowers.
Larvae from some Lepidoptera (Butterflies and moths) species such as Hebrew Character and Small Angle Shades use Ranunculus species as a food plant. The Water Crowfoots which grow in still or running water have two different types of leaves, thread-like for underwater and broader floating leaves. It is trouble free to plant Ranunculus but different species have different growing requirement. Propagation is by ripe seeds or division in spring or autumn.
