Ribes is a genus of flowering plants in family Grossulariaceae, comprising about 150 species. It is native throughout the temperate regions of Northern Hemisphere. It is also known as Flowering Currant. Ribes are deciduous shrub, easy to grow with beauttiful spring flowers. They includes the currants (blackcurrant, redcurrant and whitecurrant), gooseberries and many ornamental plants. They can be planted as ornamental plant or as hedging. Plant Ribes in sun, fertile and well-drained soil. Propagation is by hardwood cuttings in winter or layer in autumn. Larvae of some Lepidoptera species feed on Ribes. Ribes are also eaten by wombats and are grown as an attractant to the animal. In many US states, there are restriction on growing Ribes as they are a host for the White Pine Blister Rust. | ||||
