Rice paddy herb (Limnophila aromatica) is a tropical flowering plant in the plantain family, Plantaginaceae. It is native to Southeast Asia, particularly in flooded rice fields, where it flourishes in hot temperatures. It is used as an herb and also planted as an aquarium plant.
Rice paddy herb is known as ngò om or ngô in Vietnam. It has a flavor and aroma reminiscent of both lemon and cumin, and is used most often in Vietnamese cuisine. It is an ingredient in canh chua, a sweet and sour seafood soup, and also used as a garnishing herb to the noodle soup called pho.
