Scabiosa is a genus of flowering plants in family Dipsacaceae. It is native to Europe and Asia, and is commonly known as Scabious and Pincushion flower. Scabiosa is an annual or perennial plant with summer flowers, It can be grown in cottage, wild garden, containers and window boxes. It is also good for cutting. Scabiosa plants have many small flowers of soft lavender-blue, lilac or creamy white color borne in a single head on a tall stalk. The flowers are nectar rich and attract a variety of insects including Lepidoptera (Butterflies and moths) such as Six-spot Burnet moth. Scabiosa species are also used as food plants by larvae of some Lepidoptera species such as Grey Pug. Scabiosa atropurpurea (Sweet Scabious) in an annual or biennial plant, 90 x 23 cm, has flowers that comes in white, pink, lavender-blue or dark red color. S. 'Ace of Spades' has flowers with very dark purple, almost black flowers. S.'Blue Cockade' has lavender-blue flowers. S. caucasica (Caucasian pincushion flower) is a clump forming, 60 cm high and across plant. It has grey-green leaves which form a dense cluster above which the long-stemmed flowers are borne. A few cultivars have been developed from this species and the color of the flowers comes in blue, white, lavender blue, mauve, light blue, dark blue, creamy white, and dark lavender blue. Scabiosa is a hardy plant and grows well in full sun, in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Propagation is by seed and division in spring.
