Jelly bean plant (Sedum rubrotinctum)
Jelly bean plant (Sedum rubrotinctum) is a species of perennial succulent plant in the family Crassulaceae, native to Mexico. It is also known as 'Pork and Beans'.
Jelly bean plant has sprawling, leaning stems, growing 15- 20 cm tall, with a spread of 20 cm. The fleshy and short leaves resemble jelly beans, 2 cm long, with red-brown tips which turn bronze in the sun. Yellow flowers with reddish tinge are produced between the leaves in the spring. All parts of the plant may cause mild stomach upset if ingested; contact with sap may irritate skin.
Jelly bean plants grow easily, and are excellent as ground covers, in rock garden and borders, in containers or in wall niches. They do best in sun, fertile and well-drained soil. Propagation is by division or softwood cuttings of non-flowering shoots from spring to mid-summer, or by seed in autumn or spring.
