Thalictrum Gardening Tips

Thalictrum is a genus of perennial herbaceous flowering plants in family Ranunculaceae, comprising 120-200 species. It is commonly known as Meadow Rue. Thalictrums are usually found throughout most of Northern Hemisphere and south to southern Africa and tropical regions of South America, with none in Australasia. It is most common in temperate regions of the world, with 22 species found in North America.

Depending on species, Thalictrum can grow to a height of 0.5-2.5m and are usually grown in mixed borders or wild and woodland gardens. Smaller species are perfect for rock garden and taller plants are best grown among shrubs which can provide support to the slender stems. Thalictrum is famous for it attractive foliage of glaucous blue-green color and summer flowers of brightly white, yellow, lilac, purple and pink.

Plant Thalictrum in partial shade, fertile and moisture-retentive soil. Propagation is by seed or division in spring. Look out for mildew.
