Tinda (Praecitrullus fistulosus) is the only species of plant in genus Praecitrusllus of the family Cucurbitaceae, native to India. It is a popular vegetable in South Asia, grown for its immature squash-like fruit. It is also known as Indian Round Gourd, Apple Gourd, Indian Baby Pumpkin, Tindsi (Rajasthan).
Tinda is a vigorous, productive vine grown as an annual, usually begins to bear fruit after 70 days of planting. The flattish round fruit is 5-8 cm in diameter, green colored, and weighs about 30-60 grams. Tinda resembles a firm green tomato. The unique fruits are very popular in Indian and Pakistani cooking, usually used in curry and other dishes.
Tindas are available only for a short period of time during the monsoon season. Smooth-skinned tindas are much better to eat than the one with a rough, fibrous surface.
