Triticale is a hybrid of wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale), and was originally bred in Scotland and Sweden. When crossing wheat and rye, wheat is the female parent and rye is the male parent (pollen donor). The resulting hybrid is sterile and has to be treated with colchicine to induce polyploidy, and thus the ability to reproduce itself.
Triticale is grown primarily for forage and fodder although some tricale-based foods can be bought at health food stores, or can be found in some breakfast cereals. The main producers of triticale are Poland, Australia, Germany, France, China and Belarus.
Triticale has higher content of protein and lysine than wheat, with less glutenin fraction.
