Verbascum is a genus of flowering plants in family Scrophulariaceae, comprising about 250 species. It is commonly known as Mullein and is native to Europe and Asia, with the highest species diversity in Mediterranean region. Verbascums are useful herbaceous biennial or perennials, growing to a height of 0.5-3 m. They first form a dense rosette of leaves at ground level, later sending up a tall flowering stems which bear densely, spiked of flowers. The flowers come in a range of beautiful colors like yellow, orange, red-brown, purple, blue or white. Verbascum's fruit is a capsule containing numerous tiny seeds. Verbascum is an easy to grow and can grown even in poor soil, although it prefer alkaline condition. It can flowers over a long period of time, from late spring to early autumn. Plant Verbascum in full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation is by seed in lte spring to early summer and division in spring. Pest and disease are caterpillars and mildew.
