Weigela Gardening Tips

Weigela is a genus of deciduous shrubs in family Caprifoliaceae, compring about 12 species. It is native to Eastern Asia. Weigela is named after German scientist Christian Ehrenfried Weigel.

Weigela can grow to a height of 1-5m, has leaves that is 5-15cm long, ovate-oblong with an acuminate tip, and with a serrated margin. It has beautiful flowers of 2-4cm long, in color of white, pink, or red corolla. Weigela fruit is a dry capsule containing plenty of small winged seeds.

Weigela is a popular ornamental shrubs in garden. It can be planted in borders or woodland gardens, in sun or partial shade, in fertile and well-drained soil. Prune the plant after flowering and cut old shoots back to ground level. Propagation is by greenwood cuttings in early summer and hardwood cuttings from autumn.
